It sounds like it could be hypoglycemia and one of the symptoms of hypoglycemia is lack of appetite. You were wise to give the Karo syrup that helps raise the blood sugar fast and they can eat regular food within 20 minutes. Many breeders believe in having food and water available 24/7 so that they never get so hungry they lose their appetite. Small puppies lose their energy reserves so quickly, even a few minutes of playing will do it.
