He is still unsure. He doesn't realize what went wrong. He was accustomed to going out and coming back in and then something different happened and he couldn't get back the way he usually does. I would take him out a lot during the day and as it starts to get dark. If you have a back yard light make sure you leave it on. That might make him feel more comfortable about going out in the dark.

Of course he doesn't have to go out if he doesn't want to but it would be a shame if he started not wanting to do something that he had enjoyed so much. Dogs are usually creatures of habit. Once he gets back in a routine he will probably go back to enjoying his little trips out. It's so nice that he has adjusted so well to you after being in a cage the first part of his life. If he can get past that then he can get past one night on his own.
