Try to get his cage as close to your bedside as possible. Than during the day time when someone is home the cage should be in the common area. In an area of the house that he has full view of the family. It should be used for naps, time outs after play time and when he is not being observed. Try to put him in the cage during awake hours in order to get him more use to is for nights.
My cage was used as my night stand for many years as I was training my four Yorkies. I just put a piece of wood over the top to put my lamp and alarm clock on. I kept a second cage in our living room.
