One thing I would try is changing the protein. Like if you have a chicken based dog food now, switch to a fish or even lamb. Fish is stinky, and many dogs like the stinky.
No worries though, he won't starve himself. Another thing that may work is mixing a little bit of sweet potato in his kibble as well.
