You mentioned one of your pups riding on a cooler in your post - just want to mention the safety thing - having a loose pup in the car can be dangerous for the pup if you have to stop suddenly and such.
Everyone has given great suggestions about stopping often. Be careful of the rest stops - sometimes folks "prey" on travelers there and dogs can get stolen.
