They do tend to pee when they wake up so if he wakes take him out. Taking him for a walk will help him to pee. When they get out smelling things it makes them have to go especially when they get where other dogs have been.
If you want him to pee right near where you live you might want to try one of those liquid house breaking aids. You can spray it on the ground out where you want him to pee. 5 months is kind of young so it would not be unusual for him to have accidents. He is in a new place and even though they may not have been nice to him at the other place it was the only home he knew so he is confused and upset. He is a puppy still so get lots of paper towels and just reward him big time when he does go outside.
If you wear him out good before bedtime he may be safe to sleep with you but you may have to get up with him during the night. Gracie slept with me from the first night and she was a young puppy. She has always been a great sleeper though. It's just like having a baby. Some sleepless nights and some concerns now and then.
