Also, if he does not like his crate then he may cry . Put the crate rite next to your bed at night & during the day put the crate in whatever room you spend most of your time in & leave the crate door open with a blanket & toy in it . Pick up all other dog beds so that he will go in the crate for napping, with the door open always , unless you need to run to the store or somewhere real quick. This way he can become comfortable in the crate & it will be a place he enjoys to spend time. I always crate train even though mine sleep with me on the bed I want them to be comfortable in the event of an emergency where they may need to stay in a crate for whatever reason , also if they ever need to be hospitalized it makes it easier on them if they feel comfortable in small crates or cages.
Will you be home during the day with him daily ? if not I would get a baby gate for the kitchen & set up camp in there for him while your away.
