In my personal case, my dogs do NOT hunt in woods or marshy fields, they do not drink water from puddles or ditches, and I do not have wild varmine running around....squirrels, raccoons, possums.......and there has not been a case of the disease in my area for over 12 years......I feel safe with my decision NOT to give the vaccine! I have spoken with several people that have opted togive the vaccine, and they have had no problem. I kind of equate it to running red lights....eventually, the law of averages will catch up to you....the risks outweigh the benefits, in MY opinion, for ME and my "kids"! I had read something about how much a loss in income a vet practice realizes if everyone was to vaccinate their animals just with core vaccines and rabies every three years....something like their income would drop from $87,000.00 down to $30,000.00 per year. This is why vets push vaccinations, especially small practices where most of their income is based on annual vaccines and worm checks.
