Yorkies nails are harder to clip because they are black and you can't see the quick. If you let them grow too long the quick will grow long as well, and if you cut into the quick, it will bleed, so you have to cut them back gradually. I've tried all sorts of nail clippers. Joey's breeder said the secret is to hold the nail firmly, pain usually comes from the clipper moving the nail bed, and only cut the tips. If you cut them monthly you'll be in good shape. The nails should never touch the floor, if it is touching, it's way too long. Anyway, I hurt Joey once, so I can't do it, and I leave it up to the groomer. I tried Petti-paws, an automatic nail file, and that was a waste too, it takes way too long. By the way, if you walk your dog on concrete enough, this will file the back nails down, so only the front nails will need clipping.
