Well, if the tissue is punctured deep enough it must heal from the inside out or it will cause an abcess. What happens is the surface tissue heals faster over deeper tissue and it can appear "healed." Then the inner tissue that is not yet healed cannot get air, causing a pocket inside the tissue. Bacteria and infection begins and forms an abcess or pocket of infection. This is why with deep tissue cuts, it is very important to keep them clean and open so they can heal from the inside out. That is just how an abcess can form. They can form anywhere on the body from something as minor as being poked by a stick or thorn, but that is not to say for sure what is goin on with your girl as only a vet can determine that. The good thing is, "if" this is the problem, once an abcess is opened up they heal rather quickly and actually provide almost immediate relief.
