It's most likely a sign of boredom. Lexie did the same thing when she was a pup, we had 2 patches on the wall that we had to patch up and paint over she had peeled some of the drywall off too. She had lots of chew toys and ignored them all.

We taped some paper over the patches for a while and she stopped. You could leave him with some chews but i never give mine consumable chews unsupervised. He'll probably grow out of it but for now i would confine him.
