Okay, Nutrition experts, What is your opinion on which is best for my little Zoe? Your input is very much appreciated. |
Well, I am not an expert, but I feed my Edie Hills Prescription T/D at the recommendation of my vet. It also has corn as a primary ingredient. Many people on this board will tell you corn is a big NO-NO. When I asked why on another thread a few weeks ago, some people said that it is because corn causes skin itchiness. Well, Edie has great skin and does not have itchy skin, so I guess corn is not a problem for her.
Last time I was at the vet, I asked him about food and corn. He told me that Hills has some great nutrionists and he considers them to be in the forefront of pet nutrition. I asked about vitamins, since I give Edie Vitacaps every day with omega-3 fatty acids. He said it couldn't hurt, but it wasn't necessary since the food she is eating is balanced and meets 100% of her requirements.
We use the T/D because toy dogs have special dental needs. Bacteria associated with tooth and gum disease can get into the bloodstream and cause serious problems with organs like the heart, liver, etc. In fact, I read somewhere (can't recall where at this point) that "proper dental health for dogs is THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT thing you can do to preserve the health and prolong the life of your dog." That made a big impression on me.
Edie loves the T/D diet by the way, and at 5.5 years old, her teeth are gorgeous. We have never had to have a professional cleaning either.
I realize that some on this board might disagree, but I have an excellent vet, and we agree that for my little one, this is the right food.
