I haven't follow patterns much... I tend to just eyeball it and say, "I think that ought to get it..." LoL But best I recall, lay your tracing paper on top of the fabric, then the pattern, and then use the tracing wheel. The pen does come in handy for just little marks or reminders you want to put on there, or for drawing cut lines if you want to shorten something.
