I always advise people to contact the breed clubs in their area. Go to the CKC website and find out how to search for conformation clubs in your area. They are great sources of information about breeders. Interview, ask for references, look at their breeding stock and try to learn something about what a pedigree should look like. If they can't show you a pedigree you may be in the wrong place.
Everyone wants a nice looking Yorkie but look at how the mother and the father act as well. Some breeders breed for the look and don't pay enough attention to the personality of the dogs they are breeding. You want your pup to come from an even tempered intelligent line. You also want a home raised pup that the breeder has had time to socialize properly.
