No, it really isn't like smoke at all - it's just built to look that way, to satisfy the (ex!) smoker!
It really is just vapour. The way to think about it is, it's like boiling a kettle!

The atomiser (the arched metal-y bit that you put the cartridge onto) is the bit that heats up, which creates the steam - that's all there really is to it. The nicotine content goes inside your mouth - all that comes out of your mouth is
vapour.
