You might want to start by taking his water bowl up at least 2=3 hours before bed time. That will allow you plenty of time to get him out to relieving himself / empty his bladder before bed time. Make sure he's goes pee. If it is raining or cold out pups tend to not want to go and will wait until they are back inside where it is nice and warm. So make sure he has gone potty, for sure.
Also yes, put his cage beside your bed at night. Cover with a blanket.. and after the first trip out to potty if needed. Try to ignore him, use the "aah aah" command to shoosh him.
Try getting him one or two stuffed animal to sleep with. (if possible one that has mamma' scent on it) This will sumulate his litter mates.
Or
One of your t-shirts, one that has your scent on it. (sleep in it a few nights)
