You have to teach them to go up and down them most of the time I think. With Callie when we first got them we put them to the couch and I used boxes to block off the rest of the couch so she had no choice but to use the stairs and then I would give her a treat for each stair she went up and she had the hang of it but she still would rather jump most of the time except when her leg is a little sore. Sammy my moms rescue has never been "trained" to go up and down the stairs but when they come over he does it perfect every time and uses them when they are there.
