Honestly, I trust my regular vet for choosing RX foods when needed. In this case and in others, she is the one who referred me out to a specialist. Not all pups have medical issues that require home cooking. I do think it is great if you can home cook for all...I just don't do that. I will, however, home cook if the RX foods are not good for whatever the pup has....and the only way I will home cook is under the direction of a vet nutritionist.
Vets are not the stupid creatures that many think they are. They know basics about nutrition....and in most cases that is all that is needed. No, they don't specialize in nutrition....they also don't specialize in cardiology and many other specialties. That is why we go to specialists.
And, let me add that all of my pups are thriving on dog food. .. some RX...some regular.

Sure you get a sick pup here and there, but they are all well nourished and have lovely coats and are happy pups!
