We wondered the same thing when Cody was little. We read the posts about bells and decided it probably wouldn't work for Cody - he's what is termed an "aggressive chewer". We figured if we hung up bells, he'd just chew them up(he's not that bad now that he's older). So we started watching his "body language", particularly at night while watching TV. He would "look" at the door. We started asking if he wanted to go out. He would start to get excited. We would take him out. If we didn't respond as quickly as he wanted, he would make a low cry. Later he would stand at the door and bark, then look at us. He's now 2 years old and he's quite impatient if we don't move as quickly as he would like (who has who trained?).
The only downside is that he will bark and go to the door when he just wants to go out.....like in the morning when we go for a walk. Fortunately, he didn't start that until we had already established a "communication network" with Cody.
