we ride all the time, here is a photo what I use, it is designed for dogs, and because of the cage it keeps the dogs from jumping out, which I have had happen prior to getting this design. I also attach a short leash to the inside until I know the dog is comfortable and not going to jump. My suggestion is to start by putting them in the carrier and then walk your bike for a little while, then a little bit later go out for a short SLOW ride, after they feel secure you can start to ride normally. Be careful on hills and sharp curves and I only ride on paved trails or the streets in my neighborhood. The hardest is climbing up a big hill, I have to stand up and sometimes the bike sort of rocks side to side and that seems to make Lola nervous. I ride my bike a lot more because I can take her along. If we are at the park riding, I always take her for a walk after locking the bike in the truck. Dogs like the breeze in their face so they normally enjoy the bike riding. I got this on line can't remember where just goggle dog pet carriers for bikes and you should see some good options. I don't have a helmut for her but I might see about that since we ride at a good pace
