We have Jack trained on both. I love the convenience of the pee pad, specially on those cold winter nights. Jack does prefer to go outside and will let us know (finally learned to let us know he has to go out) but he will use the pads too. Like the OP said, its great because we get to sleep in too! You need to decide for yourself which is best. And initially training for the pad (or even outside) does take some time. Key to training a puppy for either is consistency, consistency, consistency.
