I agree, it is a big investment and I had my doubts before I bought one for Max. I also agree that I would wait until your little girl is fully grown. Max started in a Size 3 and I ultimately moved him up a size and gave his little brother the smaller one.
This is Max's Buddy Belt. It is 1.5 years old and has lots of mileage from daily walks on it, including in rain and snow. I have never put any kind of leather treatment on it (like BB recommends) or cleaned it any way. In fact, Max ran around a muddy baseball diamond at the park right before I took it off him to take this picture just now:

I'm like Nancy and hang up the harnesses out of the doggies' reach. My boys don't chew the BBs when they are wearing them (the guys sometimes nap in them when we return from walks), but I wouldn't be surprised if they tried nibbling on the harnesses if I left them in an accessible place.
