Actually, I think it's because he's had to fight for his food before he came to live with us. He was with 5 other dogs in his foster home and was severely underweight.
He would gobble his food so fast and then eat the cat's that he'd throw it up. He's starting to realize, though, that he's not going to have a missed meal again, poor thing.
I also don't feed kibble so it might be a little hard for it left out all day.
