I don't know if this would work, but I am teaching my little Lexi (almost 4 months now) to ring a bell I hooked to the door. She isn't really barking so much right now, so I figured she couldn't really tell me when she wanted to go out. I just put the bells there hanging down and I would ring them each time we went out and say 'potty' and pretty soon, she was pawing at the bells. I won't say it is 100 percent of the time, and she is pretty young, but it seems to be working.
