Those things are good, but something is definitely going on and it does not sound like it is just a behavioral thing. It really sounds like there is a health issue.
I'm obsessed with eyes, admittedly....gently pull up his eyelid and check for redness or bloodshot whites. As Nancy wrote, eye problems are not always visible to the naked eye, but often the white of the eye will give a clue.
One of the other hundreds of possibilities is seizures...how long do these episodes of shaking and tail-tucking last? Does Max appear alert when he is doing this? Can you easily get his attention? Or does he seem distant and not focused on you?
I agree with Nancy that health issues are often less expensive when addressed immediately.
