If the shellfish starts to smell too fishy it's getting old. Also, did you know that when it starts smelling fishy it is legally allowed to be cleaned with diluted bleach!? No lie! It prolongs selling time. That happened to me at Red Lobster once when I ordered crab legs. I told them to get me fresh ones bc these were old and smelled like bleach. They took them right back.
