I use the WAHL Trimmer and Shave UPWARDS...and never go against the edge of the ear - the trimmers will gouge their little ear if you try to shave against the edge - just remember - shave the FLAT part of the ear - aiming up.
When you Shave in the direction the hair grows.... and you can hold her ear against your thumb and it will do a nice clean job for you - practice makes perfect so don't expect it too look like a professional did it on your first try -
