When Kiko first learns a new command, she won't do it unless a treat is involved either. After Kiko is used to doing a command for food treats, I will start using it when we play fetch; if she wants me to throw the toy, she has to complete the command. After she does well with doing it for toys, then she will usually do the comand when she is told (unless she is too excited, then her ears just don't seem to work). Oh, something that helps her get the hang of commands faster is lots of short "training" sessions, just a few minutes at a time, but multiple times a day, be sure to keep it fun for both of you. Maybe one of the members with more training experience can offer more/better advice. Good luck to you both on the test.
