A pup with drainage in his/her eye should be seen by a vet imho. Eyes are not something to mess with. An ulcer can develop and go bad overnight and they can lose their eyesight!
As for over the counter products, your vet should always be available to discuss the ones with you that are ok for pups! I always call my vet for things that perhaps can be treated without being seen. You don't have to always take them in..
That is such a nice thing about calling your vet. I never knew they would do that and it has helped me out a lot this past year. I had a poodle who had so many problems this past year and had to take her in an awful lot but often I was able to ask questions and someone always called me back. I was so glad for that. I know everyone has their own opinions even vets but as far as not using Visine in their eyes my vet said if I used Visine A in her eyes that would be safe. Sadly I lost my silver lace this past November. So I use her name as my name here on this site to honor my baby. She was 16 years old this past July and is so badly missed. My Joey does comfort me or I don't know if I could handle it too well. I actually bought him over a year ago for this very purpose not knowing how soon this would happen that I would lose her.
Well, I digress on what I wrote in for originally. It just came up in my heart and came out. It is good to be able to call the vet for help and a very nice surprise to me.
