No you are not expecting to much. She is old enough to know when she needs to go. My four were completely trained between 5-8 months old. My male was took the longest. They got to sleep in our rooms at night but still went to their cage when we left the home. Up to bout a year old until I could trust them to be on their best behavior and have no accident in the house.

The key is to get her to come to you to ask to go out potty!

This is how I taught my four pup to come to me. First they must know their "name" and the command "come". Than each time before you take her out you call her to you (Christabel, Come) than in a excited tone of voice ask her if she needs to go potty. The goal is to get her excited about potty time. Do the same after her meals, while you are standing in the kitchen. Anywhere and everywhere you are in the house. If you do this every time before taking her out she will soon start coming to you.

When you are outside with her make sure she knows that potty time is something good and that she gets praised for.
