I think it is good to encourage an overwhelmed new parent to give it some time.
I also think that if a new mom is just unable to cope, then giving up a pet can be the most responsible, mature, and loving thing to do.
Life has taught me to never say "never" and not to say that I can't imagine doing that..." Life has a habit of teaching
me painful lessons in understanding whenever I say things like that.
