Please, please help with crate/potty issues! Hi All!
On Sunday, January 8th we brought our second furbaby, Rudy, home. Rudy will be 14 weeks tomorrow. We already have a 1 and 4 month old, Sophie.
So far, Sophie and Rudy get along, Rudy is getting the hang of potty outside, and things are great. However, it's when Rudy has to go in her crate or pen that things get very, very rough.
The first few nights we put Rudy in her crate on our nightstand. If she whined and would put my finger in there and she would be quiet or I would know to take her out. However, she usually already peed before whining, so it was a bit frustrating.
Preferably, we want her to sleep in her crate in the living room with our other Yorkie Sophie. Two nights ago we tried this and she barked a little, but then was quiet. However, in the morning there was pee in her crate.
She also goes, both pee and poop, in her crate when we're gone. She was only been left alone for 1 1/2 hour at the longest and I've made sure she's peed before leaving. I've tried making the crate smaller or bigger, no difference. She has laid in her pee and poop, so she's been getting baths almost daily.
As a result, last night we tried to put her in her pen with a pee pad so she could go if she needed to then get back into bed. However, she barked and whined literally all night and then we woke up to poo smashed into the floor and embedded in her paws.
I have no clue what to do right now. The crate doesn't work, the pen with a pad doesn't either. We did not have these kind of issues with Sophie. She has the occasional pee or poop in her crate, but never EVERY TIME, and she never got poop all over her.
Rudy is from a reputable breeder. We've been to this ladies home several times. She did keep Rudy with her brother and sister in a pen, so I'm not sure why she's so resistant to it, unless she's just lonely.
Rudy's only quiet when she's in bed with us, but then she's kind of a restless sleeper. We love snuggling with our pups, but prefer to keep the bed to ourselves. In addition, my MIL sometimes dog sits, so Rudy needs to learn how to sleep on her own. Sophie has no problem with this. We typically have her in our bed for a couple of hours and then when I get up to use the washroom I put her in her crate and she has no problem.
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much!! |
