I don't think she was saying that you shouldn't get a dog if your future might change, but to think about the things that could happen in your future and make sure you will be able to stick with the commitment.
A lot has happened since Couver came into my life. I bought a house, changed jobs, graduated college... might have children, but that doesn't change my commitment to my pets. They are forever
