Being a midwifery student, I am all about natural remedies, and have adapted a lot of those principles in my home as well (IE I have taught my kids if you have a headache, before you reach for that bottle of Tylenol, hydrate....98% of headaches are brought on by being slightly dehydrated. We haven't bought a bottle of Tylenol in over 2 yrs.) I was surprised that simple things like lavender oil can soothe anxiety. So much for that Xanax prescription, right??
When I got my yorkies, I took them to a vet that was close and had a 24 hour emergency staff. I didn't think about holistic options until Noah got sick with parvo and the vet had him on 4 different antibiotics and refused to allow me to give him a probiotic. I wanted to do other things that i though might help and she simoly told me she didnt believe in all that "hooey" and that i either trusted her or i didn't. I decided that once he was better (and I give them props for making him better, although we did have other issues) that I was going to change vets. I searched out a holistic vet in the DFW area, and I love him. He doesn't believe in over medicating, he's very big on treating the "whole pet" and he actually listens to me and has even taken a tool i use suggested it to other clients, so I know he heard me and validated when my concerns when it came to my babies. In talking to him about Noah and the health issues he has had since the parvo, obviously this dr would have taken a different approach. A more natural one (that I had read about and researched and took to the other vet) and a MUCH less expensive one.
Thank you for the article. Very interesting. I hate to push my views on anyone, but I truly believe western medicine isn't healing us, it's making us sicker.
