I am fortunate enough to have a former babysitter that now house sits and dog sits. In addition, if she's not available I can board him at his doggy daycare place, and they do not cage any of the dogs. Someone sleeps at the place and the dogs are never left unattended...Rocco actually sleeps in her bed with her!
Now is the time to do research in your area, and have time to test the person/place with your pup a few times before you actually need to go somewhere. Maybe a friend has a babysitter that is in college and can be trusted to house sit?
