Anal glands can fill up, become infected or abcessed. Each dog has a different tolerance level, but if they become full or impacted, it can be painful for the dog, and typical symptoms are shivering/shaking, hiding, lack of appetite, and just not acting right.
Most times the glands work fine and empty with a BM, but changes in diet can affect how well the system works.
