My boy has both dewclaws, 5 years old, and he is in long coat. We don't have a problem with them. You just have to clip them regularly just like you do with their nails on the paws. I personally would not have them removed past the first few days of birth unless they are causing physical pain/problems
From what I've learned
is an amputation in an adult because it is formed bone, whereas in a puppy it hasn't formed yet.
I don't know how it feels in a dog, but I recently experienced a partial amputation of a bone and it hurt like.... ***$&^&%!!! just my opinion, but i wouldn't put my dog through it unless medically necessary
