Most dogs don't need it done. If your dog isn't scooting and her butt doesn't stink don't worry about it. I work in a grooming salon and we groom maybe 20-25 dogs per day and only emply anal glands on about 1 or 2 dogs per day on average (usually smaller dogs). The glands are supposed to empty naturally when the dog poops so I'm all for the theory "if it's not broke, don't fix it". My girl has never needed it done. The few times I have seen her scoot she usually just had some poop stuck on her butt. If you do empty your dogs anal glands, do it before a bath because that smell does not go away on it's own and it is not a nice smell.
