I'm sure he is wary but if it is done enough it will be better but this is what your dog is probably thinking now.

Look at it in a behavior standpoint. If you are leaning over your dog, your body gesture is telling your dog that you are dominant. In your case, Chaichi knows you so it is fine. In the case of people he doesn't know, he think they are establish dominance so he will pull back his ears and look wary to tell them with his body signal I'm submissive I don't want to fight.

Solution: Tell people to don't lean over him. Or you can pick him up to introduce him to new people. Or leave he as is and let him figure out that all they want to do it pet him.
