Very interesting post. I grew up in the hills of Tennessee...really sw Virginia.
So I had a true southern hillbilly accent. My dh makes fun of me all the time for my "sayings". For example if I say "I am sick on my stomach" or "we can eat on this roast for a few days" know better but I still do it. I wouldn't write that way, but with email and texting I have developed some bad habits.
I think the rules are changing .. For example "lol" has been added to dictionaries ! Slang changes every few years, many of our students are not raised in English speaking homes so some rules are now almost out of date.
Just like basic manners, etiquette. I was raised with Emily Post and feel strongly about basic manners too!
Two of my dearest friends at work are language art teachers, they help me a lot. I have had to relearn many grammar rules that I just have forgotten. I think it come naturally to some, like spelling. I am not that lucky.
Now to a silly question.. I thought it was acceptable to used either the American or the English spelling of a word.. Would that be true of grammar rules?
