Default [News] World's Tiniest Working Dog Lives in NJ

The Guinness Book of World Records recently named the 3-year-old Yorkshire Terrier, the smallest working dog in the world.

She stole the title away from a 6-pound search and rescue dog in Japan.

The pup from Absecon works as a therapy dog, through the Leashes of Love program, based in Cherry Hill.

The tiny terrier makes her rounds each week, visiting hospitals, nursing homes, and rehabilitation centers. She also works with children with disabilities, and troubled youth.

"Because she is so tiny, people are drawn to her -- she stops traffic," said Sally Leone Montufar, owner.

Lucy has been brightening up the days of those in need for about one year, according to Montufar.

Here's how Lucy met Sally.

Montufar was working at Paw Dazzle pet boutique in Historic Smithville, when a woman walked in with several dogs. She said they needed a home, and was on her way to the shelter to drop them off.

When Lucy popped her head out of a doggie tote bag, it was love at first sight.

Montufar immediately adopted her. She says Lucy wasn't in good shape, but after several vet visits and the proper care, Lucy is doing great.

"She has a beautiful personality," said Montafur.

She hopes spreading the word about Lucy and her work, might encourage other people to rescue dogs in need of a home. "You never know the potential until you try."
