Welcome to YorkieTalk. Brushing is not required. I use my steel combs quite a bit and they are better at making sure there are no hidden tangles on my boys. The combs stimulate the follicles too (I stole one of my dogs' combs and have been using it on my head and I can feel the difference

When I am lazy or my boys are a complete mess, I use my ISINIS brush. It is a good quick detangler that doesn't damage. I never use the pin brush if my boys are dirty.
