At the US Marines museum in Quantico, there is a stuffed GSD. He was a doggy war hero. George Washington's horse is preserved and in one of the museums in DC.
I suppose it is no different than the way we have preserved humans for centuries and a few famous ones have been put on display.
I still wouldn't want to do it to my pet.
