My little Lu is just under 3.5 lbs and there is no possible way I could ever convince her not to jump on to or off of our couch. Our couch is average height from the floor and we have area rugs in the living room and family room.

Lu has jumped off my bed as well and that just about gave me a heart attack as my bed is extremely high and I have hardwood floors. Scolding her was enough to convince her not to do that again.

With your dog being 5.5 lbs and even though your couch is a bit high, I don't think I would worry about him jumping off your couch because of the height (unless he has shown some kind of joint issues already) but you might want to consider an area rug for him to land on. I think my concern would be the lack of traction because of the hardwood flooring and the possibility of landing funny or his legs splaying funny and causing stress to his joints in that way.

Just my two cents worth.
