Many show breeders will sell 'pet quality' puppies to the general public.
Years ago, I wanted a Maltese and bought a book on same. I saw pages of pictures from the same breeder and many photos of her showing in the ring.
I contacted her (in PA) and she had a male dog born with ony one testicle - means he can never be shown - but just fine for a pet quality dog that will be neutered anyway. (Neuter is alittle more expensive).
Long story short - I bought a book to research the breed I wanted; and ended up purchasing a pet quality dog from a show breeder. Casper was a wonderful dog - but he was not going to end up in the show ring.
I traveled a couple of hours and visited twice before I decided.
It can be done. I was very young then and didn't find it all that hard.
