I think it's difficult to generalize. Some people simply can't afford to take a sick day. I feel that if you CAN afford to, and you're in the contagious stage, you should just stay home if you have the flu. To combat all the sick people that come to work, I wash my hands often.
We have people at our office that take a sick day at every little sniffle (often made up, I'm sure) because they don't really need the job, and others that never miss a day no matter what (like the guy with a stay at home wife and four small kids at home!). I stay home for the flu but not for a cold. We don't get paid sick days. The only people asking for paid sick days are the ones with little kids, that tend to take sick days often for THEM rather than for themselves. THAT bothers me. If your kid is sick, take a vacation day, or just a day off without pay. And before people get upset, I'm a parent, too.
