The breeder had told me, some of the more scraggly looking pups (sparse hair/oily appearance), have the silkier coats but nothing can be guaranteed. I can imagine the more experienced show breeders know exactly what to look for and at what point i.e., 12 weeks, 16 weeks.

I've heard that too, cotton coats are typically thicker and grow faster and many people love the look, but I can tell you that silky coats are so much easier to care for.
By the way, my little stud did go through an awkward period.
