Five years ago, I bought a plain black one, and just recently bought another plain black one. The new one isn't as soft as the old one, it's not supper stiff, but it's not buttery soft either. So I don't know if it just takes time, kind of like a baseball glove or they are making them differently. I have read that the painted leathers and the black crocodile and patent leather are much stiffer.
