The main problem with the vet's is the chance of contamination from a diseased animal. If you have a good clean vet that is on the up and up they will not mind disinfecting in front of you. It is much safer to have an experienced vet take care of your puppy. I know it may be tempting to show your puppy off but until all it's shots have taken effect keep your puppy away from the public.
Personally, I think it is irresponsible of your breeder to suggest that you vaccinate yourself.
