Maybe the vet is referring to the fact the male does not have undescended testicles. Or maybe marking and humping.

The case for male neutering as a preventative health issue is probably not across all breeds and all dogs axiomatic. In fact a vasectomy could just as easily acheive "unwanted pregnancies" without depriving the male of their much needed hormones. Also owners due diligence, can prevent unwanted pregnancies as well!

Females are less clear in terms of health risks/benefits for sterilization. Again tubal ligation can prevent pregnancies.
